Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about windows, glass, and shower enclosures.
Windows & Energy
How do I know if my windows need replacing?
Signs include drafts, condensation between panes, difficulty opening/closing, visible damage, and high energy bills. Take our Window Replacement Readiness Quiz to assess your windows.
What is Low-E glass?
Low-E (low emissivity) glass has a microscopically thin coating that reflects heat while letting light through. It improves energy efficiency by keeping heat inside during winter and outside during summer.
What do window energy ratings mean?
Key ratings include U-Factor (heat transfer, lower is better), SHGC (solar heat gain, depends on climate), and VT (visible light transmission). Look for ENERGY STAR certified windows for your climate zone.
Are triple-pane windows worth the cost?
Triple-pane windows offer the best insulation but cost 25-50% more than double-pane. They're most beneficial in extreme climates or for noise reduction. In Idaho, quality double-pane Low-E windows often provide the best value.
Shower & Bath Glass
What type of glass is used in shower doors?
All shower doors must use tempered safety glass per building codes. If broken, tempered glass shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces rather than dangerous shards.
Frameless vs. framed shower doors—which is better?
Frameless doors offer a modern, open look but cost more and require thicker glass. Framed doors are more budget-friendly and easier to install. Semi-frameless offers a middle ground.
How do I prevent water spots on shower glass?
Squeegee after each use, apply protective coatings, and clean regularly with non-abrasive cleaners. Factory-applied coatings like EnduroShield can help prevent buildup.
Costs & Installation
How much does window replacement cost?
Costs vary widely based on window type, frame material, and installation complexity. Budget $300-$700 per window for standard double-hung, or $800-$1,500+ for premium options. Get multiple quotes for accurate pricing.
Can I claim a tax credit for new windows?
Yes! The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit offers up to $600 per year for qualifying windows and skylights. Windows must meet ENERGY STAR Most Efficient criteria. Take our Tax Credit Eligibility Quiz to learn more.
How long does window installation take?
A typical window takes 1-2 hours to install. A whole-house project (10-15 windows) usually takes 1-2 days. Factors include window type, accessibility, and whether it's a full-frame or insert replacement.
Safety & Codes
What is an egress window?
An egress window is a code-required emergency exit in bedrooms and basements. It must have a minimum opening of 5.7 square feet, be at least 20" wide and 24" tall, with a sill no higher than 44" from the floor.
Does my older home have lead paint around windows?
Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, especially around windows. Any renovation work must follow EPA RRP (Renovation, Repair, and Painting) rules. Hire Lead-Safe certified contractors for window replacement.
What is safety glass and where is it required?
Safety glass (tempered or laminated) is required in hazardous locations: shower doors, glass near doors, large windows near walking surfaces, and windows within 18" of the floor.
